1. Adequate Space: Large turtles need plenty of space to swim, bask, and move around. A regular-sized tank may not provide enough room for them to do so comfortably. A turtle tank designed for large turtles will be bigger in size, allowing them to have ample space to carry out their natural behaviors.
2. Water Quality: Turtles produce a lot of waste, and without proper filtration and water changes, the water in their tank can quickly become dirty and harmful to their health. A larger tank means more water volume, which dilutes the waste and makes it easier to maintain good water quality.
3. Basking Area: Basking is essential for turtles as it helps regulate their body temperature and aids in digestion. Large turtles need an elevated basking area big enough for them to fully stretch out and bask comfortably. A turtle tank designed for large turtles will have enough space for a suitable basking area.

It is recommended to have at least 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length for aquatic turtles. For semi-aquatic turtles, the tank should be at least four times the length of your turtle’s shell and twice the width.
I personally prefer a tank with a capacity of at least 75 gallons for my large turtle. This allows enough space for my turtle to swim and bask comfortably without feeling cramped.
Material
The material used for the tank is crucial as it affects both the durability and safety of your turtle. Glass tanks are commonly used and are suitable for large turtles as they are sturdy and provide good insulation. However, glass tanks can be heavy and prone to cracking or breaking if not handled carefully.
I recommend using acrylic tanks as they are lightweight, durable, and have better insulation than glass tanks. They are also less likely to break or crack if accidentally dropped or bumped into.

In addition to providing enough space, proper filtration system, basking area, and lighting, adding some accessories can enhance your large turtle’s living environment. These can include rocks, plants (real or artificial), logs or branches (for climbing), and hiding spots.
I personally like adding live plants in my turtle’s tank as it not only adds aesthetic value but also helps maintain water quality by absorbing excess nutrients from waste products produced by my large turtle.
